Assam’s river island district Majuli made its entry into the global market on Friday by exporting 267 metric tonnes of red rice, locally known as bao dhan, to Dubai and Russia—marking its first-ever international consignment of the indigenous crop.
The ceremonial flag-off event was led by Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam, in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak, SSP Bibekananda Das, and agriculture department officials. The export is being facilitated by IVC Agrovet Pvt Ltd.
Speaking at the event, MLA Bhuban Gam said the initiative is a major step towards promoting Assam’s traditional organic produce internationally and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.
Deputy Commissioner Pathak added that the export underscores Majuli’s strength in sustainable agriculture, noting that local farmers have preserved organic farming practices for generations.
