International Master Mayank Chakraborty has become the first chess Grandmaster from Assam, securing India’s 94th GM title.

The 16-year-old achieved his final Grandmaster norm at the 8th GM Tournament in Sweden, held at the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young Talent Tournament. He led the tournament with seven points out of nine, clinching the final norm with a round to spare after defeating International Master Philip Lindgren in the eighth round.

Hailing from Guwahati, Mayank has been the highest-rated player from north-east India and now becomes the first Grandmaster from the region, marking a historic milestone for Assamese and north-eastern chess.

Mayank’s achievement has been widely congratulated by the chess community, his team, and family.
