Assam wicketkeeper Uma Chetry has been named in the Indian Women’s T20 International squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa, starting April 17 in Durban.
Chetry returns to the squad after missing the recent series against Australia. The team will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur, with other members including Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues. Matches in the series are scheduled to be played in Durban, Johannesburg and Benoni, with the final match set for April 27.
Chetry hails from Kandulimari village in the Bokakhat area of Golaghat district. She began playing cricket at a young age and was encouraged by her mother after being seen playing with her brother and other boys. She is the only girl among five siblings and studied at Bokakhat Hindi High School.
In June 2023, Chetry represented India A at the ACC Women’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup. She was first named in the senior India squad in July 2023 for a series against Bangladesh and was later included in the squad for the Asian Games in September 2023.
In May 2024, she was selected in India’s WODI, WT20I and Test squads for the series against South Africa and made her T20I debut on July 7, 2024. She was also part of India’s squad for the home WODI series against New Zealand in October 2024.
Chetry was later named in the squad for the WODI series against Australia and the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup as a replacement for injured wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia. She made her WODI debut during the tournament against Bangladesh.
