Kokrajhar, Feb 3: Bhutan’s Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck was conferred the 22nd Upendra Nath Brahma ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award, 2025, at a ceremony held at Bodoland University in Kokrajhar on Monday.

The award was presented in recognition of her humanitarian services, compassionate leadership, contributions to social welfare, efforts in cultural preservation, and work towards women empowerment. Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck is the first wife of former Bhutan King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

Addressing the programme at the Jwhwlao Nileswar Brahma Auditorium, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said it was a privilege for Assam to host the Queen Mother and described the honour as a fitting tribute to her lifelong commitment to human dignity. He also noted that the award symbolised the strong and enduring ties between India and Bhutan, with Assam playing a central role in fostering the relationship.

The ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award is dedicated to the ideals of Bodo leader Upendra Nath Brahma, widely known as ‘Bodofa’, who is remembered for his sacrifice, courage, and service to humanity despite economic challenges. Acharya also appreciated the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust, established in 1999, for carrying forward his legacy through initiatives aimed at supporting marginalised communities.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Gelephu Mindfulness City Governor Lotay Tshering, Assam Minister U G Brahma, Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary, and former Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro.
