Guwahati, May 12: The BJP and its alliance partners are on track for a decisive victory in the Assam panchayat elections, as the counting of votes for Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats continues.
The two-phase elections, held on May 2 and May 7 across 27 districts, have seen the BJP-led NDA leading in a majority of constituencies.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence in the party’s performance, stating that the NDA is expected to secure 83% of the 397 Zilla Parishad seats and 91% of the 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats.
Sarma credited the victory to the leadership of state BJP president Dilip Saikia and the collective efforts of party leaders, including Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Rameswar Teli, National Secretary Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and Union MoS Pabitra Margherita. He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued support for Assam, which he said played a significant role in the party’s success.
The BJP-led NDA is currently leading in 285 Zilla Parishad seats and 700 Anchalik Panchayat seats, with major wins in districts such as Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Nagaon, and Morigaon.
