Guwahati, May 17: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a landslide victory in the Assam panchayat elections, winning a majority of the Zila Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats across 27 districts. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia hailed the outcome as a “new record and milestone” for the state.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, Scindia said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the people of Assam have given a landslide victory to the BJP and our alliance, setting a new record and a new milestone.”

The BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 300 out of 397 Zila Parishad seats and 1,436 out of 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the media earlier, stated that the NDA secured 76.22 per cent of the vote share in Zila Parishad and 66 per cent in Anchalik Panchayat.

Of the total Anchalik Panchayat seats, the BJP won 1,265 and the AGP 171. The Congress secured 72 Zila Parishad seats and managed 21 per cent of the Anchalik Panchayat seats.

Sarma said the results reflect a clear pro-incumbency trend and show a significant rise in vote and seat share compared to the 2018 polls—an increase of over 26 per cent. He termed the results a major boost ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the NDA’s strong performance in Hindu-majority regions and noted gains in minority-dominated areas. “In several such seats, we secured the second position, and if this continues, it could impact up to 103 Assembly seats,” he added.

The elections were conducted in two phases on May 2 and May 7. The NDA recorded notable wins in Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Nagaon, and Morigaon districts.
