Kokrajhar, March 20: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally, on Thursday announced its candidates for 11 seats in the April 9 Assam Assembly elections. The list includes Cabinet Minister Charan Boro and party president Hagrama Mohilary’s wife, Sewli Mohilary.
The announcement followed the release of candidate lists earlier in the day by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The BPF dropped sitting MLA Durga Das Boro but retained two incumbents: Rabiram Narzary from Dotma and two-time MLA Charan Boro from Mazbat. Sewli Mohilary will contest from Kokrajhar, marking her electoral debut.
Former MLAs fielded by BPF include Rihon Daimary (Udalguri), Thaneswar Basumatary (Manas), Maneswar Brahma (Baksa), and Maheswar Boro (Bhergaon). Rezaul Karim, former president of the All Assam Minority Students’ Union, who recently joined BPF, will contest from Parbotjhora. The remaining candidates are Sabharam Basumatary (Gossaigaon), Rupam Roy (Baokungri), and Paniram Brahma (Sidli Chirang).
In the current Assembly, the NDA holds a strong position with BJP’s 64 MLAs, AGP’s nine, UPPL’s seven, and BPF’s three. The opposition comprises Congress (26), AIUDF (15), CPI(M) (1), and one Independent. Votes will be counted on May 4.
