Guwahati, Jan 2: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 362 crore modernization project for the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden, aimed at upgrading the zoo’s infrastructure and transforming it into a state-of-the-art conservation center for wildlife and visitors.
During his address, Sarma underscored that the Assam State Zoo, established in 1957, is the only zoological and botanical facility in Northeast India and plays a crucial role in conserving the region’s unique biodiversity. The planned improvements will include new animal enclosures, enhanced visitor amenities, and upgraded infrastructure, positioning the zoo as a premier conservation hub.
Reflecting on his childhood visits to the zoo, Sarma explained that the decision to modernize the facility was part of his broader vision for wildlife conservation in Assam. The Rs 362 crore initiative will modernize the zoo’s facilities and make it a model for other conservation centers in the region.
The Chief Minister also announced plans for two additional zoos to be established in Dibrugarh and Silchar, with respective budgets of Rs 259 crore and Rs 214 crore. These zoos will adopt an open zoo model, promoting more natural environments for the animals.
Sarma further revealed the creation of an Institute of Wildlife and Health at Chabua, designed to improve care for wild animals. He also highlighted the state’s progress in curbing poaching, citing the formation of a Special Task Force to handle poaching cases involving elephants and tigers. Additionally, more than 74,000 bighas of encroached forest land have been cleared, contributing to the recovery of wildlife populations.
The Chief Minister also shared the findings of the “Elephant Population Estimation in Assam” report, which states that the state is home to 5,828 elephants, marking positive developments in wildlife conservation.
The event was attended by Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Health Minister Ashok Singhal, MP Bijulee Kalita Medhi, and other senior officials.
