Guwahati, Mar 31: In a shocking incident ahead of Assam’s assembly elections, Congress candidate Sunil Kumar Chetry from the Naduar constituency was assaulted by unidentified miscreants, whom the party alleges are backed by the ruling BJP.
The attack occurred on Monday evening at Napalm Bypass in the assembly segment. Chetry’s convoy came under assault, leaving the candidate injured and writhing in pain on the ground before he was rushed to a private hospital for treatment.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi condemned the violence, directly blaming BJP supporters. “All are equal under the law,” Gogoi asserted, demanding immediate arrests and urging the administration to ensure impartial treatment for ruling and opposition parties alike.
Gogoi further highlighted the incident as a stark reflection of the state’s deteriorating law and order situation. Chetry is contesting against senior BJP leader Padma Hazarika in the high-stakes polls.
Elections to Assam’s 126-member assembly are scheduled for April 9, with votes to be counted on May 4.
