Guwahati, March 24: The Congress party is preparing for a high-intensity campaign in Assam ahead of the assembly elections on April 9, with results scheduled for May 4.
The campaign will be led by Lok Sabha Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Congress is contesting 100 of the 126 seats as part of an opposition alliance.
Party insiders said the campaign will begin in full force after March 26, the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Rahul Gandhi is expected to headline public meetings across the state, focusing on social welfare and development while targeting the ruling NDA. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will concentrate on mobilizing women voters, who make up nearly half of Assam’s electorate, while also attacking the ruling coalition.
Congress has been in opposition in Assam since 2016 and hopes to return to power in 2026. While party managers see a strong chance of success, they acknowledge the contest remains an uphill task.
The leadership is expected to address around five major public events and several corner meetings, with a concentrated push in about 35 constituencies in the upper districts including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Majuli, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji — where the party aims to counter the NDA’s influence.
