Guwahati, May 27: The Congress on Tuesday named Wazed Ali Choudhury as the leader of its Legislature Party in Assam, with Joy Prakash Das appointed as the deputy leader. The announcement was made in an official statement issued by AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal, who said the appointments were approved by party president Mallikarjun Kharge with immediate effect.

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions within the party over the selection of the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel had recently indicated in Guwahati that the party high command would soon finalize the matter.

In the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Congress secured 19 seats, with 18 Muslim MLAs and Joy Prakash Das as the lone Hindu MLA.
