Guwahati, Jan 19: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said an FIR has been lodged over a forged letter circulating on social media that was falsely issued in his name and sought a “course correction” in Assam ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
The letter, purportedly written on Sonowal’s official letterhead and bearing a signature claimed to be his, was addressed to BJP national president J.P. Nadda. It referred to the “ground situation” in Assam and called for changes before the polls expected in March–April. Sonowal said the letter and its contents were “completely fake and fabricated.”
In a post on X, Sonowal described the circulation of the document as a serious criminal offence involving forgery, impersonation and misuse of official identity to spread misinformation and discredit a constitutional authority.
He said an FIR has been registered at the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi, and law enforcement agencies have been asked to carry out an urgent investigation and take action against those responsible.
Sonowal also urged the public and media to verify information only through official channels and refrain from sharing unverified or misleading material.
