Congress leader and Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the BJP and the state government are being run like his “private limited company.”
Speaking at a joining programme in Guwahati, where several leaders from BJP, AGP, and AIUDF switched to Congress, Gogoi said many within the saffron camp are disillusioned and seeking to join his party. “Those who entered BJP to serve the people are being denied space. Today, BJP no longer functions as a political party but as Himanta Biswa Sarma Private Limited,” he said.
Leaders who joined Congress included former AGP leader Satyabrata Kalita, ex-BJP MLA Binanda Saikia, AIUDF working president Abu Saleh Najmuddin, and several local leaders. Gogoi added that another round of inductions would take place on October 10.
Gogoi highlighted Congress’s commitment to equality and inclusivity, stating the party would protect the rights of all communities, castes, and religions. He contrasted this with what he described as the CM’s arrogance and disregard for ordinary citizens.
New entrants also criticised their former parties. Kalita accused the AGP of failing to implement the 1985 Assam Accord, while Saikia said BJP was using Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary for political gain, ignoring his message of unity.
With assembly elections due next year, Gogoi said Assam was ready for a “real battle” and promised a people’s government under Congress committed to love, respect, and harmony.
