Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has raised concerns over suspected illegal infiltration in Assam, questioning the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He pointed out that despite the BJP being in power for nearly ten years, suspected infiltrators continue to enter the state and urged the government to take effective action rather than indulging in political rhetoric.

Gogoi reiterated the Congress party’s opposition to illegal Bangladeshi residency in Assam and called for coordinated efforts between the state and central governments to address the issue. “If suspected infiltrators are still entering Assam, why is the government not taking action and only playing politics?” he asked.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma responded by criticizing former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed for suggesting Bangladeshis could live in India, accusing her of supporting illegal migration. He emphasized the importance of protecting Assam’s identity, stating on social media, “Bangladeshis are not welcome in Assam. Those sympathizing with them can accommodate them in their own homes. Assam will never be surrendered to illegal infiltrators.”

The exchange followed a public meeting organized by Assam Civil Society, where Hameed’s remarks faced criticism from activists and public figures, including Harsh Mander and Prashant Bhushan, highlighting the ongoing debate on immigration and identity in Assam.
