Assam, Feb 28: Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections from the Jorhat constituency as the Indian National Congress moves closer to announcing its first list of candidates, party sources said.

During a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee held on Thursday evening, around 40 candidates were reportedly finalised. The announcement of the first list is expected after the official poll schedule is declared. Gogoi, who currently serves as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has been actively involved in alliance discussions ahead of the elections.

Speaking earlier this week, Gogoi indicated that talks with several parties were nearing completion, while negotiations with Raijor Dal were still ongoing. He stated that formal announcements regarding alliances are expected soon once discussions are concluded.

According to an APCC release, Gogoi recently visited New Delhi and briefed the party’s central leadership on the status of alliance negotiations. He said the high command would soon provide further direction after reviewing reports submitted on the discussions, including updates on pending talks.

Assembly elections in Assam are scheduled to be held in the first half of 2026. Earlier this month, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, reviewed poll preparedness during a two-day visit to Guwahati.

The Election Commission of India also held meetings with representatives of national and regional political parties to seek inputs on election arrangements and conduct.
