Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday intensified his criticism of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that the leader may soon “flee abroad” and raising questions about the nationality of his family members.
Sarma told reporters that Gogoi’s opinions carry little weight, claiming that “most of his immediate family members are foreigners.” He added, “Earlier I used to give importance to his views, but when I came to know that his children and wife are foreigners, I realised he too may eventually flee abroad.”
The Chief Minister further said, “What wisdom can someone share when three members of his family are foreigners? I consider such a person to be a Bangladeshi foreigner.”
Sarma has made similar claims before, describing Gogoi as a “deep-rooted Pakistani agent” in May and accusing him and his wife of involvement in “anti-India activities.”
Gogoi rejected the allegations as “lies and slander” and questioned why illegal infiltration into Assam persists despite nearly a decade of BJP rule. He reiterated that no Bangladeshi should reside illegally in the state and stressed the responsibility of both the Centre and the Assam government to maintain border security.
