Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday questioned the ongoing investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, alleging that the BJP-led state government has failed to provide clarity even after more than 40 days.
Addressing a party programme where several BJP workers joined the Congress, Gogoi said, “It has been more than 40 days, yet we still do not know what exactly happened to him. Instead of diverting attention, the government must ensure justice. What is SIT doing so far that we still have no clue about Garg’s death?”
The deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha accused the government of misusing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to target intellectuals, artists, and opposition leaders, instead of focusing on uncovering the truth.
He further alleged that people are “fed up” with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, citing corruption and the “illegal wealth” allegedly amassed by his family and close associates. “That’s why several leaders and workers are leaving the BJP, which has now turned into a limited company serving only a few,” Gogoi remarked.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea during his visit to attend the 4th North East India Festival (NEIF). His sudden death sparked widespread public outcry, leading to over 60 FIRs filed across the state.
A Special Investigation Team under the CID is probing the case. So far, seven people, including NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
