Guwahati, May 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi visited Pakistan on an invitation from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), sparking a heated exchange between the two leaders. Sarma claimed that Gogoi received a letter from the Ministry of Interior, Government of Pakistan, and spent several days in the country.
Sarma stated that he has seen evidence supporting his claim and promised to reveal the documents at a press conference on September 10. “I have been saying it from the chief minister’s chair after every 24 hours because it is a serious issue,” he said.
However, Gogoi has strongly denied the allegations, calling them “insane and nonsense.” He accused Sarma of following a script “worse than a B-grade film” and behaving like an “IT cell troll.” Gogoi urged Sarma to put forth the facts in the public domain if he has any evidence.
The Congress party has also reacted strongly to Sarma’s allegations, with spokesperson Jairam Ramesh saying that the personal attacks on Gogoi are “worse than atrocious” and meant to divert attention from Sarma’s own corruption and misdeeds.
The spat between Gogoi and Sarma comes ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam next year, with Gogoi hinting at a potential change in government. “We will ensure that after 2026, he gets to have some rest,” Gogoi wrote on social media, expressing concern over Sarma’s mental health.
