Guwahati, Dec 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that Guwahati has recorded a marked improvement in air quality due to focused interventions undertaken by the state government. He said particulate matter (PM) levels in the city declined from 119 micrograms per cubic metre to 103 in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

According to the Chief Minister, the improvement is the result of measures in solid waste management, vehicle emission control, and the promotion of electric mobility. Assam’s ranking in the Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2025 also improved significantly, moving from 38th to 21st place.

Sarma said the city now operates 256 electric buses and 100 CNG buses as part of efforts to shift toward cleaner public transport. On the occasion of National Pollution Control Day, he urged residents to minimise the use of personal vehicles and adopt environment-friendly practices to help maintain cleaner air in Guwahati.
