Guwahati, Nov 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that VFS Global has agreed in principle to set up a dedicated visa facilitation centre in Guwahati. The centre will process visa applications for more than 60 countries, easing the need for residents of Assam and other northeastern states to travel to Delhi or Mumbai for biometric submissions.
The Chief Minister stated on X that further details, including the list of countries and expected timelines, will be shared soon.
On the same day, Sarma distributed appointment letters to 377 TET and TET-cum-Recruitment qualified candidates from the Tea Tribe and Adivasi communities at Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra, Guwahati. With these appointments, Assam’s total number of government recruitments since 2021 has reached 1,35,376, conducted through a transparent, merit-based process.
Sarma also handed over funds to educational institutions to waive fees for students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families enrolled in Higher Secondary and four-year undergraduate courses for the academic year 2025–26.
Highlighting government achievements, Sarma said the administration has surpassed its 2021 Assembly election promise to provide one lakh government jobs, noting that the total appointments do not include contract-based recruitments under schemes like Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and the National Health Mission.
