The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by Hagrama Mohilary, has won a decisive victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, securing 28 of the 40 seats and reclaiming power in the region.
The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), headed by Pramod Boro, won 7 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed 5 seats. The Congress failed to win any seat, according to the Assam State Election Commission.
Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev described the results as a setback for the BJP in Assam and thanked supporters for backing TMC’s first electoral contest in the BTC region, saying the outcome signals the beginning of political change in the state.
The BPF’s victory ends the previous BJP-UPPL alliance that had governed the council. Preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony, tentatively scheduled for October 3 in Kokrajhar.
Elections were held on September 22 across five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur. A total of 316 candidates contested the 40 council constituencies, including 30 reserved for Scheduled Tribes, five for non-STs, and five unreserved.
According to the State Election Commission, 26.58 lakh voters were enrolled for the BTC polls, with voting conducted at 3,279 polling stations. Vote counting took place on September 26 under tight security.
