Agartala, June 24, 2025: Train services over the Lumding–Badarpur hill section were suspended from Monday evening after a massive landslide, triggered by ongoing road repair work by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), caused boulders and land mass to fall onto the railway track between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur.
The disruption has severely impacted connectivity to northeastern states including Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Barak Valley.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the slope between the road and railway line failed due to the roadwork, causing a significant portion of land to shift toward the track. Water from the road side is also flowing directly over the railway line, worsening the condition.
Describing the situation as “critical and highly unsafe for train movement,” NFR suspended all rail traffic in the Lumding–New Haflong–Badarpur section with immediate effect. In a press release, NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the Lumding Division has formally requested NHAI to deploy manpower and machinery for protection work to prevent further damage to the strategic railway route.
Meanwhile, railway teams have been deployed to clear debris and restore the track. However, several train services have already been affected:
