Guwahati, Dec 31: A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati on Wednesday sentenced Md Kamruj Zaman, also known as Kamaruddin, to life imprisonment for establishing a module of the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) in Assam to carry out terrorist activities.

The court imposed three concurrent sentences under anti-terror laws, with the maximum being a life term, and fined Zaman Rs 5,000 in each case, failing which he will face an additional three months of simple imprisonment.

Zaman was convicted for conspiring during 2017-18 to recruit members, including Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk, with the aim of spreading terror among the public, the NIA said. Sahnawaz, Saidul, and Omar had pleaded guilty and were convicted, while the fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, passed away during the trial. The NIA had filed chargesheets against all five in March 2019.
