The Meghalaya government has set up a committee to review the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) report on alleged forest land encroachment by the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said the committee will cross-check the CEC findings and inspect the sites mentioned in the report.

The CEC had investigated following a petition by Assam BJP leader Jitul Deka, who alleged that USTM had encroached on forest land.

Experts from the State Pollution Control Board, the Mining and Geology Department, and the local administration will participate in the verification process, Tynsong added.
