A Royal Bengal tiger was killed by a mob in Dumukhia village under the Khumtai area of Golaghat district on Thursday, forest officials confirmed.
The adult male tiger had allegedly attacked several villagers in recent days, prompting locals to label it a man-eater. Armed with machetes, sticks, and rods, the villagers surrounded and killed the animal before forest and police personnel could arrive.
Upon reaching the site, officials recovered the carcass but found that some parts, including a leg, a portion of skin, and some meat, were missing. The villagers fled the scene on spotting the authorities.
The forest department has registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
