Golaghat, Apr 11: Atul Bora, President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), stated that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to secure around 90 seats in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Speaking to ANI, Bora said both AGP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are likely to increase their seat tally. He also referred to the high voter participation as an indication of strong democratic engagement in the state.
According to official data, Assam recorded a voter turnout of 85.38% on April 9, higher than the 82.04% turnout in the 2021 Assembly elections.
Under the NDA seat-sharing arrangement, BJP contested 89 seats, AGP 26 seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) fielded candidates in 11 constituencies, primarily in the Bodo Territorial Region.
Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress (Congress) stated that the voter turnout reflects a demand for change. In contrast, NDA leaders attributed the turnout to support for the incumbent government’s development initiatives.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the election as a significant moment for the state, citing high participation across constituencies.
A total of 722 candidates are in the fray, and vote counting is scheduled for May 4.
