Guwahati, May 14: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a sweeping victory in the Assam Panchayat Polls 2025, winning a substantial majority in both Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats across 27 districts.

Announcing the results, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the people of Assam, calling the verdict a resounding endorsement of the government’s welfare-oriented governance model under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) together won 300 out of 397 Zilla Parishad seats and 1,436 out of 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats. The NDA secured 76.22% of the vote share in Zilla Parishad and 66% in Anchalik Panchayat elections.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati, Sarma said the results indicate a strong pro-incumbency wave and a 26% increase in seat and vote share compared to 2018. He stated that the BJP alone won 1,265 Anchalik Panchayat seats, while AGP secured 171. Congress managed to win 72 Zilla Parishad seats and 21% of the Anchalik Panchayat seats.

Sarma noted that the NDA dominated in Hindu-majority areas and made significant inroads in minority-dominated regions, winning five such seats and emerging second in several others. He added that support from women in these areas played a key role.

“The people’s faith in our governance has given us fresh motivation as we move towards the 2026 Assembly elections,” Sarma said. He also announced plans to organise a panchayat-level conference in Guwahati, where senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda, will be invited.

The panchayat elections were held in two phases, on May 2 and May 7, across 27 districts. The NDA registered significant victories in districts like Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Nagaon, and Morigaon.

Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia also addressed the media, congratulating party workers and thanking voters for their support.
