Researchers from Gauhati University have discovered a new plant species in Assam and named it Osbeckia zubeengargiana in honor of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, recognizing his contributions to culture and environmental conservation.

The species, belonging to the Melastomataceae family, was found in the grasslands of Manas National Park. While it shares some characteristics with Osbeckia rostrata, such as tetramerous flowers, it can be distinguished by its unique plant structure, leaf morphology, bract shape, hypanthium features, style base, and seed size.

The discovery is part of a research project on Melastomataceae in Assam conducted between 2021 and 2025. Scientists carried out detailed morphological studies, microscopic examinations, and comparisons with related species to confirm it as a new taxon. Voucher specimens have been deposited at the Gauhati University Herbarium (GUBH).

The genus Osbeckia includes 43 species worldwide, with eastern Himalayas and the Western Ghats as major centers of endemism. Prior to this finding, Assam had five known species and three varieties of Osbeckia.

This discovery enhances Assam’s botanical diversity and underscores the region’s potential for new species identification.
