Guwahati, Aug 7: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that there is no immediate requirement to establish a new railway coach factory in Assam, as existing and planned production units are adequate to meet the demand for rolling stock.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Vaishnaw was responding to a query from MP Joyanta Basumatary regarding the proposal for a coach factory in Kokrajhar as part of the Bodoland Accord and for the development of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
The minister clarified that coach factories are set up based on the overall national requirement. However, he added that a Wagon Periodic Overhauling Workshop has been sanctioned at Bashabari in Kokrajhar district, with an estimated cost of ₹256.36 crore.
