Assamese singer Papon has paid an emotional tribute to his late friend and iconic musician Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19. On Instagram, Papon shared an old photograph with Garg, expressing that he deeply misses his “brother” and hopes he rests in peace.
Along with the tribute, Papon called for a swift and transparent investigation into Garg’s death, appealing to authorities to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Zubeen Garg reportedly died in an alleged drowning while attending the Northeast India Festival in Singapore. His body was brought back to Assam via Delhi, and his last rites were held at his native Kamarkuchi village on September 23. Thousands of fans, family members, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and other leaders attended the ceremony, where Garg was accorded a gun salute.
Zubeen Garg was a leading figure in Assam’s cultural landscape, excelling as a singer, composer, music director, actor, and filmmaker. Over a career spanning more than three decades, his music touched generations, leaving a lasting legacy celebrated across multiple languages and traditions.
