Guwahati, Feb 20: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to focus on jobs, development, and plans for the next five years instead of revisiting a decade-old controversy over his potential Congress chief ministership.
Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Vadra alleged corruption within Sarma’s administration, claiming wealth was concentrated in “one family” and state assets were being handed over to big industrialists. She emphasized that the people of Assam were recognizing the need for change.
Vadra dismissed Sarma’s recent claims that Sonia Gandhi had offered him the CM post in 2014, supported by 58 MLAs, only for Rahul Gandhi to intervene. “There are many decisions in politics. Some go in favour, some against. What would I say if he is still crying over the 10-year-old issue?” she said.
Sarma had defected from Congress to BJP in 2015 after leading a dissidence against then-CM Tarun Gogoi, paving the way for BJP’s first assembly win in Assam in 2016.
Vadra urged Sarma to present his achievements and a clear roadmap for Assam’s people, particularly youth seeking employment. She appealed to voters, especially women and young people, to support “positive politics” that strengthens the state, describing the alleged corruption as a betrayal of Assam’s citizens.
