The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam government to probe alleged links of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi with Pakistan submitted its report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday. The report was handed over at Lok Sewa Bhawan in the presence of SIT members Munna Prasad Gupta, Rosie Kalita, Pranabjyoti Goswami, and Maitrayee Deka.
Chief Minister Sarma, in a post on X, said the SIT was formed on February 17 this year to investigate the activities of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his associates. He claimed the probe unearthed “startling facts” suggesting a wider conspiracy against India.
According to Sarma, the investigation revealed that Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior facilitated the visit of an Assam MP to the neighbouring country and indicated the involvement of a British national, married to an Indian MP, in Sheikh’s alleged activities.
The Chief Minister added that the state government will examine the findings in detail before presenting them to the Assam Cabinet. “Once the matter is discussed in the Cabinet, the information gathered during the enquiry will be made public,” he said.
Sarma has previously accused Gogoi of being “deeply involved” in anti-India activities, while Gogoi has dismissed the allegations, calling them “lies and slander.”
In August, Gogoi had questioned why infiltrators continued to enter Assam despite the BJP-led government being in power for nearly a decade and reiterated that the Congress opposed the illegal stay of Bangladeshis in the state.
