The Supreme Court will on Thursday hear a petition filed by journalist Abhisar Sharma seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Assam Police over a video post.

Sharma, represented by advocate Sumeer Sodhi, has challenged the FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 152, which deals with acts endangering India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity, and Section 196, relating to promotion of enmity between groups.

The FIR followed a complaint by Alok Baruah, who alleged that Sharma’s video, which questioned the allocation of 3,000 bighas of land to a private company and criticized the state government’s policies, could incite communal distrust against authorities.

The case is listed before a bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh. The Supreme Court’s hearing comes after it recently granted interim protection from arrest to senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar in a similar FIR under Section 152 in Assam.
