Guwahati, April 10: The Telangana High Court on Friday granted Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera anticipatory bail for one week in connection with a case filed by the Assam police over allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

Justice Sujana Kalasikam, while hearing Khera’s petition, stated that the relief was being extended for one week to allow him time to approach the appropriate court. The order came with conditions attached to the temporary protection.

The case was registered at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 175 (false statement in connection with an election), Section 35 (right of private defence of body and property), and Section 318 (cheating).

On April 5, Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of the Assam Chief Minister, held multiple passports and owned foreign property that was not disclosed in the CM’s election affidavit. Following this, an Assam police team visited Khera’s Delhi residence for questioning.

Reacting to the allegations, Sarma accused the Congress of failing to verify documents before making claims against his family. He further asserted that Khera had “run away” to Hyderabad, adding that Assam police would “hunt him down even from pataal (netherworld).”

The matter has intensified political tensions between the ruling BJP in Assam and the Congress, with legal proceedings now adding another dimension to the controversy.
