Three Arrested with Heroin worth ₹6 Crore and Tripura Registered Vehicle in Assam; Telecom Engineer Among Accused

Agartala, July 01, 2025: In a major breakthrough against cross-border drug trafficking, Assam Police on Tuesday seized heroin worth approximately ₹6 crore, arrested three individuals including a fiber engineer and Tripura registered vehicle.

The operation was led by Sribhumi District Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, who acted on specific intelligence inputs about a consignment of drugs being smuggled into Assam from Mizoram using a vehicle bearing telecom service company markings.

Police officials in plain clothes had been deployed at multiple strategic locations across Sribhumi district on Monday night. Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, a Tripura registered white Bolero vehicle bearing registration number TR01M2262 was intercepted near the Nilambazar police station after it crossed over from Champhai district of Mizoram.

Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered 870 grams of heroin concealed in a specially designed secret compartment. The drugs were packed in 76 soap cases. Three individuals were arrested from the spot: Sabbir Ahmed, a resident of Patharkandi; Iftikhar Ahmed, a telecom service fiber engineer from Guwahati; and Suhel Ahmed, a resident of Hailakandi.

According to police sources, the heroin’s estimated value in the illegal market is close to ₹6 crore. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the network and possible involvement of others.

The arrested trio was produced before the District Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
