Guwahati, Mar 5: Three candidates from the ruling NDA coalition BJP’s Jogen Mohan and Teras Gowala, along with UPPL’s Pramod Boro—filed their nominations for Rajya Sabha seats on Thursday, paving the way for an uncontested election.
With the opposition lacking the required numbers in the 126-member Assam Assembly, officials confirmed the trio’s unopposed victory. The nominations were submitted in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The seats are currently held by BJP’s Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli, as well as independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, whose terms expire on April 9.Mohan, MLA from Mahmora and state Cabinet Minister for Transport, Hill Area Development, and Indigenous & Tribal Faith, leads the BJP nominees. Gowala, representing Duliajan, made a unique entrance by cycling to the Assembly. Boro, former Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, marks UPPL’s second Rajya Sabha MP.
Assam’s Upper House representation will now include BJP’s Pabitra Margherita and Kanad Purkayastha, AGP’s Birendra Prasad Baishya, and UPPL’s Rwngra Narzary.
The NDA dominates the Assembly with BJP’s 64 MLAs, AGP’s nine, UPPL’s seven, and BPF’s three. Opposition parties trail with Congress at 26, AIUDF at 15, CPI(M) at one, and one independent.
