Haflong, Nov 10: The bodies of three first-year students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar were recovered from a waterfall in Dima Hasao district after they reportedly slipped and fell during an outing, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Sarva Kritika (20) and Sauhard Rai (20), both from Uttar Pradesh, and Radhika Kumari (19) from Bihar. The group had visited the Bahkol Waterfall near Harangajao village on Saturday morning. While one body was recovered the same evening, the remaining two were found around 12:30 pm on Sunday.

Police said two teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted search operations to locate the missing students. The bodies were later taken to Haflong for post-mortem examination.

NIT Silchar Director Professor Dilip Kumar Baidya said the students had left the campus without prior permission, violating institutional guidelines. “It is mandatory for students to inform before leaving the campus. Unfortunately, this rule was not followed,” Baidya stated.

Families of the deceased have been informed, with two already in Dima Hasao and one en route. Officials are coordinating arrangements for the handover of the bodies, either at Haflong or the NIT campus.

Following the tragedy, NIT Silchar has announced that additional safety and monitoring measures will be introduced to ensure student accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
