The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a severe flood warning for parts of Assam, as three rivers—Dhaleswari, Katakhal, and Buridehing—continue to flow above their respective danger levels in Hailakandi and Tinsukia districts.
As of 6:00 am, the Dhaleswari River at Gharmura in Hailakandi district was flowing at 29.74 metres, which is 1.69 metres above its danger level of 28.05 metres. The river is showing a rising trend of 100.0 mm per hour and is currently 6.77 metres below its highest flood level (HFL) of 36.51 metres, recorded on June 13, 2018.
The Katakhal River at Matijuri in the same district was recorded at 20.73 metres—0.46 metres above its danger mark of 20.27 metres—with a rising trend of 150.0 mm per hour. It remains 2.00 metres below its HFL of 22.73 metres, recorded on September 10, 2007.
In Tinsukia district, the Buridehing River at Margherita was flowing at 134.55 metres, marginally above its danger level of 134.42 metres. However, the river is showing a falling trend of 9.99 mm per hour. It is currently 2.96 metres below its HFL of 137.51 metres, recorded on August 26, 2016.
Authorities have been advised to stay on high alert as water levels continue to fluctuate, posing risks of flooding in low-lying areas.
