Guwahati, Mar 21: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Saturday released its first list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9, marking the party’s significant expansion into the Northeast.
The candidates were finalized under the guidance of party chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The list includes key constituencies across Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Kamrup, as well as the upper Assam and Barak Valley regions.
Notable nominees are Udangsri Narzary (Baokhungri, Kokrajhar), Mominur Islam (Bilasipara, Dhubri), Arif Akhtar Ahmed (Jaleswar, Goalpara), Kaushik Ranjan Das (Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon), Kalyani Kalita (Bajali), Dulu Ahmed (Chamaria), Bhogial Rabha (Boko-Chaygaon ST), Bikash Nath Yogi (Palasbari), and Amirul Islam (Barkhetri). From upper Assam and Barak Valley, the party has fielded Jiten Nag (Digboi), Dilip Moran (Makum), Tapas Das (Udharbond), Fazlur Rahman Laskar (Katigorah), and Shahajahan Laskar (Sonai, Cachar).
In a press release dated March 20, AITC wished the candidates success, expressing confidence in their ability to engage voters across the state.
This announcement follows the party’s submission of 18 star campaigners to the Election Commission on Friday, led by Mamata Banerjee and including Abhishek Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, Sushmita Dev, and Shatrughan Sinha.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has announced 94 candidates, forming alliances with Raijor Dal and other parties to counter the BJP-led NDA. The BJP will contest 89 seats, AGP 26, and BPF 11 in the 126-seat Assembly. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4.
