Train Services Fully Restored in Northeast After Week-Long Disruption Due to Landslides

Agartala, June 30, 2025: Regular train services connecting South Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram with the rest of the country via Guwahati have fully resumed from Monday, a week after landslides disrupted operations in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

The disruption began on June 23 when multiple landslides triggered by continuous rainfall severely damaged the railway tracks in the hilly terrain of Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The affected stretch, particularly the Jatinga Lampur–New Haflong section, saw both passenger and freight traffic come to a standstill.

NFR officials confirmed that train operations over the affected stretch were partially restored on Sunday and have now returned to normal. “Goods and passenger trains are running as scheduled over the repaired section. Engineers and technical teams will continue to monitor the region, especially given the monsoon conditions,” said a senior NFR official.

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma noted that the landslides had caused severe damage to the Lumpur–New Haflong stretch. Following the incident, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava visited the site, supervised the restoration efforts, and encouraged field staff working round-the-clock to clear debris and repair the track.

The railway had earlier cancelled, diverted, and short-terminated multiple trains affecting the region’s connectivity. With full operations restored, the NFR has thanked the public for their patience and urged passengers to check updates through official channels.

Landslides and waterlogging frequently disrupt train services across the Northeast during the monsoon season. The Lumding-Badarpur Hill section, a critical railway link for four states, remains particularly vulnerable each year from June to September.
