In the ongoing investigation into the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore, two additional Assamese expatriates—Abhimanyu Talukdar and Tanmoy Phukan—appeared before the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday. Both, office-bearers of the Assam Association Singapore, were among the 11 expats present on the yacht where Garg died while swimming on September 19.
So far, seven Assamese NRIs based in Singapore have given their statements to the CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), while four others are yet to respond to summonses issued by the agency. Earlier, Rupkamal Kalita was interrogated for over 24 hours before being released.
The CID had issued summonses to all 11 expats present on the yacht, with repeated notices sent to those who had not appeared. Meanwhile, five other key individuals in Singapore at the time of the incident—including festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta, and DSP Sandipan Garg, cousin of Zubeen—have been arrested.
Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were also taken into custody following financial investigations that revealed transactions exceeding Rs 1.1 crore from their accounts. All seven arrested individuals face charges under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence, and remain in police custody.
