Guwahati, August 18: Outrage sparked in Assam’s Dima Hasao district after the gang-rape and murder of Bina Engtipi, a 48-year-old woman from Umrangso. The Dimasa Students’ Union (DSU) and villagers are demanding the death penalty for the accused: five workers of the L&T Construction company. The incident, which occurred on August 13, 2025, has sparked widespread outrage and protests in the region.
According to reports, five L&T Construction workers have been arrested in connection with the crime. The accused individuals are Stephen Hanse from Umrangso, Rabindra Rana from Nepal, Abdul Rahman from Barpeta, Satya Acharjee from Lanka, and Ayon Choudhary from Madhya Pradesh.
The DSU and local civil society groups have demanded swift justice and capital punishment for the accused, emphasising that the crime constitutes an attack on women’s safety and dignity. “This crime is a blow to humanity itself,” a joint statement from local organisations read.
Mass protests erupted in Boro Longlai village, with residents from all communities demanding the death penalty for the culprits. The protesters have vowed to continue their agitation until justice is fully served.
The Assam Police have assured that the case will be pursued with the strictest measures to ensure justice for the victim. The swift arrests have been praised, but activists warn that the rising frequency of violent crimes against women in the region calls for enhanced preventive measures.
The victim, Bina Engtipi, a mother of three sons was also a grandmother to a grandson. She was the wife of a headman Hemari Terang from Rongkhelan longku, Dima Hasao. The brutal crime has sent shockwaves through the community, and the demand for justice is growing louder.
