Guwahati, August 14: The Union Cabinet has given its nod for the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. This will be the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the Northeast region after IIM Shillong. The project is expected to receive a central investment of over ₹500 crore.
The new IIM will help bridge the gap in management education in the Northeast, promote entrepreneurship, and enhance employability in the region. It will also establish Guwahati as a leading educational hub, complementing existing institutions like IIT Guwahati, National Law University, and AIIMS Changsari.
The bill to establish the new IIM is likely to be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing session. This move is part of the Centre’s efforts to strengthen higher education infrastructure in the Northeast and reduce regional disparities in access to elite institutions.
