Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, called on Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his official visit to the country. The meeting took place in Labasa following Margherita’s participation as the Guest of Honour at the 146th Girmit Day celebrations.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various key sectors. Margherita described the interaction as meaningful and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening ties with Fiji.
As part of the Girmit Day celebrations, Margherita paid tribute to the Girmitiyas Indian indentured labourers brought to Fiji between 1879 and 1916 highlighting their enduring legacy and contributions to Fijian society. He also joined Prime Minister Rabuka in presenting awards to their descendants and expressed appreciation to the Fijian government for declaring Girmit Day a national holiday.
Margherita also virtually inaugurated a Yoga Centre in Seaqaqa, which he described as a symbol of the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between India and Fiji. The centre is expected to promote holistic health and wellness in the region.
He also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora during the visit. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Margherita was on an official visit to New Zealand and Fiji from May 8 to 12.
India’s ties with Fiji date back to 1879, when Indian labourers first arrived under the indenture system. By 1916, around 60,553 Indians had been brought to Fiji. India established a Commissioner in Fiji in 1948, and the post was upgraded to High Commissioner after Fiji gained independence in 1970.
