Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal became the first Indian minister to visit Norway’s Minnehallen Memorial, where he paid homage to 86 Indian seafarers who lost their lives serving on Norwegian merchant ships during World War II.
Sonowal expressed deep respect for the courage and sacrifice of Indian sailors, who were the third largest foreign national group aboard Norwegian vessels during the war. Many hailed from Punjab, Bengal, and Goa. Their names are engraved on copper plaques at the memorial, which honors over 8,000 seafarers who perished during both World Wars.
Speaking after the visit, Sonowal said, “It is an honour to remember the brave Indian sailors whose legacy of dedication inspires us to strengthen maritime ties and uphold their spirit.”
The Minnehallen Memorial stands as Norway’s official tribute to fallen seafarers, symbolizing the shared history and enduring maritime bonds between India and Norway.
