Guwahati, Jan 15: The World Bank has approved loans worth $680 million for three projects in Assam aimed at strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure, improving school education, and enhancing governance and public service delivery, the lender said on Wednesday.
According to the World Bank, the largest share of the funding $350 million has been allocated to the Assam Disaster Resilient Hill Roads Development Project. The project focuses on building climate-resilient roads in the state’s hilly regions to improve connectivity for tribal and rural communities. It is expected to reduce travel time for around 1,90,000 people. The project also includes the development of upgraded transport hubs with truck bays, container handling facilities, taxi and bus stands, and electric vehicle charging points.
Another $250 million has been approved for the School Education and Adolescent Wellbeing Project. The initiative aims to improve learning outcomes for more than 2 million primary school students across Assam. It will also support around 2 million adolescents aged 10 to 19 years by providing life-skills training, job-oriented learning, an updated curriculum, and multilingual education support.
The remaining $80 million will fund the Assam Governance and Service Delivery Program. This programme is designed to strengthen public financial management, improve resource allocation, enhance administrative services for citizens and businesses, and develop the state’s data and digital systems.
The World Bank stated that all three loans have a maturity period of 16 years, including a grace period of three years.
