Imphal, March 16: Boong, the Manipuri film produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, has become the first film from the state to earn over ₹1 crore at the box office following its re-release.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film won the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the BAFTA Awards on February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Boong was produced in collaboration with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures. Its narrative explores social and political tensions in Manipur through the story of a young boy, Boong (Gugun Kipgen), who embarks on a journey with his friend Raju (Angom Sanamatum) to find his missing father and bring joy back to his mother Mandakini (Bala Hijam).
Before its theatrical release in September 2025, Boong premiered internationally, including at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and Warsaw International Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim.
The film’s box-office success highlights the growing recognition of cinema from Northeast India.
