Agartala, December 22, 2025: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 27-year-old man at New Jalpaiguri station on charges of smuggling counterfeit currency.
Acting on a tip-off, the Special Operations Group (SOG) team detained the accused from the general compartment of the Agartala–Deoghar Express (down) train on Sunday.
The arrested youth has been identified as Md. Ekram Ansari, a resident of Hasanpur in Purnia district, Bihar. During the search, police recovered multiple SIM cards, two bank passbooks, a chequebook, two ATM cards, and a mobile phone from his possession.
Authorities claim that four black packets containing counterfeit notes worth ₹2,74,500 were seized from his bag.
Police sources said the accused will be produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Monday, where investigators will seek his remand. The GRP and SOG have launched a probe to trace the source of the fake notes and identify others involved in the racket.
