The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally requested a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Sikkim under Article 371(F) of the Constitution, which safeguards the rights of indigenous Sikkimese people.

A BJP delegation, led by party functionaries, met the District Election Officer (DEO) in Gangtok to press for the revision and submitted a detailed memorandum earlier presented to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), citing legal and constitutional grounds, BJP spokesperson Sangay Gyatso Bhutia said on Tuesday.

Bhutia highlighted that the electoral rolls must be updated in line with Article 371(F), the Sikkim Citizenship Order Act, 1975, and the Representation of the Sikkim Subject Act, 1974, emphasizing the party’s commitment to protecting Sikkim’s unique identity.

Reiterating its “Sikkim and Sikkimese first” stance, the BJP criticized other political parties for remaining silent on the issue, calling it “deeply disappointing and alarming” and urging the public to recognize the importance of the revision.

The party added that it would continue to monitor developments related to the SIR to ensure the rights and interests of the Sikkimese people are fully protected. Last month, the Election Commission of India ordered Special Intensive Revision drives in 12 states and Union Territories, including four set to go to polls next year.
