Guwahati, March 30: BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Monday alleged that the Congress, during its tenure, facilitated the illegal entry of Bangladeshis into Assam, while claiming that the BJP government has since acted to curb infiltration.

Speaking at a rally in support of BJP candidates in Morigaon district, Nabin accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of hurting Assamese sentiments by refusing to wear the traditional gamocha at an event in Delhi, while “regularly visiting mosques and happily wearing the skull cap.” He charged the Congress with supporting infiltrators and said, “They had allowed Bangladeshi infiltrators to enter the country. It is the state’s BJP government which is reversing the trend and showing the exit path to illegal immigrants.”

Nabin further asserted that Assam has witnessed “massive development” during the BJP’s 10 years in power, contrasting it with what he described as an earlier era of extremism, violence, investor flight, and broken dreams for the youth. He urged voters to ensure such instability does not return.

Polling for Assam’s 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4. The BJP-led NDA has governed the state since 2016.
